Danang has a network of road, rail, sea and air routes.

According to statistics of the Department of transportation, to the end of 2010, there are 1,002 streets with a total length of 848.473 km. The majority of roads is the asphalt and concrete road with surface quality is relatively good. Including highway: 94, 276km; urban roads: 512, 687km; provincial roads: 99, 916km; district roads: 64, 654km; commune roads of 44, 7 km; specialized roads: 32, 24 km and 29 bridges with a length is more than 25m, with a total length is 5,293md (only urban roads and provincial roads), in which large bridges: 6 bridge/ 3,915md. On average each year, completing building put into exploitation and using is 39.2 km/year. The density of road reached 4.72 km/km2; land for traffic captured 9.27%.

The North - South railway passing through Da Nang city has 42km length from Lang Co station to Hoa Vang district, with stations such as Da Nang, Thanh Khe, Kim Lien , Hai Van Nam. In which, Da Nang station is one of the biggest stations of Vietnam .

Located in the middle of the country, city sea transportation is quite favorable . From here, there are sea routes to almost all major ports in Vietnam and around the world. With 2 ports are Tien Sa and Song Han located in a favorable position, modern equipments and a skilled workers team. Da Nang Port has ensured the good transportation to the everywhere in the world.

Danang international airport aviation has an area of 150 ha ( the area is 842 hectares ) , with two runways , each over 3.048m in length , 45 meters wide ; able to lower how the aircraft the B747 , B767 , A320 . Every week Danang airport to welcome around 100 domestic flights and international flights to and from Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia ( 4 times / week ) , Singapore ( 4 times / week ) , Guangzhou ( 2 times / week), and the charter flights from Hong Kong , Taipei , Seoul and Russia ....

Water supply system and electricity supply and production is gradually being upgraded. They are built to serve the people life better as well as for production and business activities.

Information and communication has been developed, modernized and became the third largest center in the country.

Location The city of Da Nang consists of a land area and an archipelago on the East Sea.  Its mainland latitude and longitude is 15055' to 16014' N and 107018' to 108020' E.  Da Nang borders with Thua Thien-Hue Province in the north, Quang Nam Province in the south and the west, and the East Sea in the east.  Its sea area consists of the Hoang Sa archipelago, which is located at 15045’ to 17015’ N and 1110 to 1130E and about 120 nautical miles to Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai province, in the south. Da Nang is situated in the centre of Viet Nam, 764km from Ha Noi and 964km from Ho Chi Minh City.  It lies on the north-south transport axis of land, rail, sea and air routes.  From Da Nang, visitors can conveniently access four famous World Heritage Sites, comprising Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Hue Citadel, Hoi An Old Town, and My Son Cham Sanctuary.      Tien Sa Port is a pivotal part of the East-West Economic Corridor, the gateway to the Pacific Ocean of Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and central Viet Nam.  Located on international sea and air routes, Da Nang has an especially favourable location for rapid and sustainable development. The city has a natural land area of 1,283.42km2, comprising 241.51km2 of urban districts and 1,041.91 km2 of rural districts. Climate Da Nang is located in the zone of typical tropical monsoon, temperate and equable climate.  The city's weather bears the combination of the north and the south climate characters with the inclination to the former.  There are two seasons: the wet from August to December and the dry season from January to July, cold waves are occasional but they are of average and short lasting.  Average humidity is 83.4%. Average temperature is about 260C, the highest is 28-300C in June, July and August; the lowest is 18-230C in December, January and February.  In Ba Na Mountain, the temperature is 200C.  Average rainfall is 2,505mm per year that concentrates during October and November. The average humidity is 83.4%; highest in October and November the average of 85.67 to 87.67%; lowest in June and July, the average of 76.67 to 77.33%. The average annual rainfall is 2504.57 mm / year; highest rainfall on October and November the average of 550 - 1,000 mm / month; lowest in months January, February , the average from 23-40 mm/month. Average hours of sunshine is 2156.2 hours; most on may and June, the average of 234 to 277 hours / month; least on November and December , the average from 69 to 165 hours / month Terrain Terrain of Da Nang has just plain and mountain, high mountains and steep concentrated in the North West and West, from here there are many mountains run long to the sea, some low hills interspersed alternative narrow coastal plains. Mountainous terrain occupied large area, height  from 700-1.500m, large slope (>400), where high concentration of watershed forests and has meaningful to protection of ecological environment of the city. Short and steep Rivers System, originating from the west, northwest and Quang Nam province. Coastal plain is the low land influenced by salinity marine, is the focus of many basis of agriculture, industry, services, military, land and in the functional areas of the city.

I. DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVES - Develop Danang city to be the powerhouse which plays the crucial role in the regional development strategy applying the multipolar concentrated model and open space; to be in close cooperation with the Key Economic Area  in Central Vietnam and the whole country; to develop marine economy and international economic integration; - Focus on the efficient exploitation of the potentials and advantages of Danang city to boost the city’s socio-economic development in a rapid and sustainable manner in line with  speeding up the economic structure transformation into service-industry-agriculture and improving the growth quality towards industrialization and modernization; to be an economic-cultural-scientific hub of the region and collaborating with the neighbouring provinces to establish the North-South economic corridor; - Link the socio-economic development to the urban refurbishment and upgrading as well as urban spatial expansion; focus on the development of physical infrastructure and prepare necessary conditions for the following periods; - Combine the socio-economic development with health, cultural and educational improvement with an aim to ensure the continuous enhancement of people’s lives and intellectual standards   link economic development to maintenance of social justice and political stability, social order and safety, as well as national defense and security; - Combine economic development with protection of natural resources and ecological environment which ensures the rapid and sustainable development; simultaneously realize Vietnam’s  millennium commitments effectively; II. DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES 1. General objectives Construct and develop Danang city to be one of the large national urban areas of the country and a major socio-economic hub of Central Vietnam with the role of a service hub, the seaport city, the important domestic and international transportation and transit hub; the post – telecommunication and finance – banking center; and one of the centers of culture and sports, education and training, science and high technology in Central Vietnam, the city of strategic position in defense and security of Central Vietnam and the whole country. 2. Specific objectives a) Economy - The economic growth is expected to reach 12 – 13%/ year, making Danang a powerhouse of growth and development for the neigbouring areas; - The economic structure has been transformed towards services-industry, construction – agriculture. The expected economic structure of the city by 2020 would be: 55.6%, 42.8% and 1.6% for services, industry and construction, and agriculture respectively; -By 2020, the city’s GDP is expected to account for approximately 2.8% of the country’s GDP; export turnover in the period of 2011-2020 is expected to increase by 19 – 20%/ year; GDP per capita is expected to reach US$4,500 – 5,000; the revenue rate over GDP is expected to be maintained at around 35-36%; and the speed for annual average technological innovation is expected to be at 25%. b) Social affairs - Realize the state management according to the project “urban government” ; - Maintain the natural population growth rate of below 1%; create jobs for over 30,000 labors annually; it is expected to have neither malnourished children nor poor households in Danang city by 2020; - Continue the expansion of education and training scope; promote the socialization of education;  upgrade the school system; ensure the national standards of all grade schools; Improve  the vocational training for industrialization and modernization to ensure  all employees will be provided with appropriate vocational training; - Continue the enhancement of health socialization; strengthen the resources serving people’s needs of disease prevention and treatment; - Develop the city’s civilized and modern culture in line with conservation of the national cultural identity; - Ensure that the economic development would go hand in hand with the improvement of living environment quality; and all residents are equal in the accessibility to public services; - Focus on development of physical infrastructure in association with the improvement of the quality of urban public services such as transport, water supply and drainage, waste water treatment, environmental sanitation, landscape, parks, lighting, public transportation, etc. to create urban landscape and space as well as to improve environmental conditions; - Improve the consolidation of the national defense, maintain the political stability, social safety and national security. c) Environmental protection - The period 2011 - 2015: + Ensure that 90% of waste water in industrial and export processing zones as well as domestic waste water from all inner districts would be collected and well-treated; + Control all sources of hazardous waste and well treat such waste according to sanitary standards (complete the statistical survey of hazardous waste in the city; complete the construction of hazardous waste collection and treatment system; build the concentrated medical solid waste treatment area); + Improve the socialization of collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste; sort the waste at source; ensure that 90% of domestic solid waste would be collected and treated according to sanitary standards; + Form and develop the waste recycling industry; ensure that 50% of collected waste would be recycled and about 50% of the dead would be cremated; + Ensure that 90% of urban population and 70% of rural population could access to clean water; control the air pollution from arising sources such as road traffic, emissions from industrial facilities and urban areas; ensure that the air pollution index (API) would be less than 100; + Expand the urban green space (including landscapes, parks, flower gardens, trees on streets and at schools) in a reasonable layout and species which is expected to reach 3 – 4 m2/ person; implement the measures for conservation of forest biodiversity; continue carrying out the “Natural forest closed” policy; strengthen the management and protection of forests as well as accelerate the afforestation in order to increase the forest coverage up to 50.6% by 2015. - The period 2016 - 2020: + Develop Danang to be an “environment-friendly city” by 2020; + Further realize the targets set for the period from 2016 to 2020 which meet all criteria for the environment city, namely: 100% domestic and industrial waste water would be treated to meet the environmental standards; 70% of solid waste would be recycled; 25% of the water would be re-used; + Expand the urban green space with around 9- 10 m2/ person by 2020.

Da Nang symbol

The Da Nang symbol has the theme 'Three Blues: mountains - river - sea and Three Whites: wind - sky - sand'. The idea emerged from the city's location by sea, mountains, river and rice fields in a picturesque and harmonious landscape. Images of the Marble Mountains, rice fields in Hoa Vang, fresh sandy beaches at Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu and the bridge linking Hai Chau and Son Tra districts are shown.

In 1835, after King Minh Mang ordered: “European vessels are not allowed to anchor to do trade at any harbours except for Han Port”, Da Nang became the largest commercial port in the central region. The local small-scale industries, including shipbuilding, preliminary processing of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, and trade, services prospered accordingly. The French colonists, after establishing their domination of the whole of Vietnam in 1889, separated Da Nang from Quang Nam Province and renamed the city Tourane and under the control of the Governor General of Indochina. In the early 20th century, Tourane was developed on a European model, which focused on social infrastructure and manufacture technology. Many kinds of economic activity took shape and thrived, such as agricultural production, small-scale industries, export product procesing (tea, food, beverages, ice, alcohol, fish sauce, dried fish), ship building and repair, and services. Together with Hai Phong and Sai Gon, Tourane became an important trading center of the country. In 1950, French gave the authority over the city to the Bao Dai government. In March 1965, American marine units landed and started to set up a big military complex. The city was defined as a centrally governed city in 1967, and accordingly American troops and the Saigon government built up Danang into a political, military and cultural center of the 1st and 2nd tactical zones. Military bases and such infrastructure as the airport, ports, warehouses, roads, public works, communication stations, and banks were constructed. Industries flourished, resulting in the substitution by industrial zones of handicraft workshops. For example, Hoa Khanh Industrial Zone was used for oxygen, acetylene and detergent production, grind and textiles industries. However, the devastating war made thousands of rural people flee in refugee camps. Urban slums appeared, social evils increased and production came to a standstill.     In 1975, after gaining complete independence, Da Nang (temporarily under Quang Nam – Da Nang Province) began to overcome the war’s severe consequences. Regardless of difficulties, the city’s rehabilitation and development had some results, especially after the renovation in 1986. On 6 July 1996, the tenth session of the 9th National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam passed a Resolution separating Quang Nam – Da Nang Province into Quang Nam Province and Da Nang city, which was directly responsible to the central government. The new city of Da Nang consisted of the previous Danang, Hoa Vang Rural District and Hoang Sa Island District.

Da Nang history

In the middle of the 16th century, when Hoi An was a busy center of the south, Danang was only a small port for goods in transit and ship repair. It gradually developed into a commercial port replacing Hoi An in the early 18th century, when European shipbuilding was improved and large deep draught vessels could easily enter Danang Bay.
